The top ice rinks to experience this Christmas
Liverpool Ice Festival Rink
Liverpool’s 600-metre ice rink is undercover, so you can visit whatever the weather. Not only that, but there’s also a huge 45-metre ice slide to tackle, as well as an ice bar serving up cocktails in sub-zero temperatures. It’s all part of Liverpool Ice Festival, and it’s happening on the city’s waterfront.
Pier Head, Liverpool, 10 November to 6 January.
London’s Somerset House Ice Rink
For the most elegant setting in London, it has to be the 18th-century courtyard at Somerset House. There’s a skate school for kids at the weekends, club nights with big-name DJs, and even a pop-up Christmas arcade stocked with goodies from Fortnum & Mason.
Somerset House, London, 14 November to 13 January.
Hyde Park Winter Wonderland Ice Rink
London’s Winter Wonderland is home to the biggest open air ice rink in the UK. It winds its way around a Victorian bandstand where there’s live music, and the whole thing lights up with fairy lights as the sun sets. Christmas ice skating doesn’t get much more festive.
Hyde Park, London, 22 November to 6 January.
Nottingham Winter Wonderland Ice Rink
Skaters aged four and upwards can take to the ice at Nottingham Winter Wonderland this year. The petite rink is surrounded Nottingham’s festive Victorian Christmas Market, so you can do a bit of Christmas shopping before heading for drinks at the ice bar.
Old Market Square, Nottingham, 16 November to 31st December
Cardiff Winter Wonderland Ice Rink
The ice skating rink at Cardiff’s Winter Wonderland will have a clear roof and a canopy of fairy lights to keep skaters dry, whatever the weather. And will allow for sparkling views of City Hall and the night sky. There’s also an addition this year of the 'Sur La Piste' bar which will bring the Apres Ski vibe to the city centre. They'll be serving up food and drink, and a funfair with rides that are just right for children.
City Hall Lawn, Cardiff, 15 November to 6 January.
Norwich Ice Rink
The ice skating rink at Norwich is open for a fourth year for Christmas 2018. A real-ice affair, it’s 300 metres squared, so there’s plenty of space to practise your triple Salchow.
Castle Mall Gardens, Norwich, 14 December to 6 January.
Bristol Millennium Square Ice Rink
Bristol’s city-centre Millennium Square Ice Rink will be running several special events alongside standard skating. Top of the list are skating along to music and little boots at the weekends and school holidays for the little ones.
Millennium Square, Bristol, 17 November to 6 January.
Newcastle Life Ice Rink
For something a bit different, try the rink at Newcastle’s Times Square. As well as ice skating, you can visit the planetarium and experience the 4D Motion Ride. Yes, that’s 3D viewing with a 4D experience. Hold on to your hats.
Centre for Life, Newcastle upon Tyne, 10 November to 24 February.
Manchester Ice Rink
Winter Gathering is Manchester’s flagship Christmas event, and as well as markets, food stalls and a programme of live music it features a festive ice rink. It all takes place at First Street by Deansgate Locks.
Deansgate Locks, Manchester, 16 November 15 to 13 January.
