So book ahead, sort your megabus tickets, and start planning your trip…

1. Uncover a mystery in Nottingham
Looking for something a bit quirky to do in Nottingham? The National Justice Museum might not sound like the most obvious place to take your date, but bear with us. They run regular special events, including a 1940s-themed murder mystery party just before Valentine’s Day on 12 February. Cocktails and Crime: Ballroom Blitz is your chance to perfect those victory curls, don your most dapper 1940s attire, and discover whodunnit by the end of the night. The cocktails sound pretty good, too.

2. Take a romantic city break to Edinburgh
Edinburgh was made for romantic city breaks. Scotland’s compact capital is wall-to-wall with gorgeous restaurants, first-rate bars and must-see attractions, so it’s ideal for a weekend trip. While you’re here, book a romantic movie night at Filmhouse Edinburgh – an arthouse cinema and home of Edinburgh International Film Festival. This place has bags of character, a great café and a brilliant line-up of world cinema, independent flicks and mainstream movies. Afterwards, take a stroll through Princes Street Gardens and stop off for a sugary dessert at Coro the Chocolate Café. Sweet.

3. Get your bake on in Birmingham
Fancy impressing your beau with your baking skills? Then head down to The Big Birmingham Bake. This Great British Bake Off-inspired tent is on Floodgate Street, about a 15-minute walk out of the city centre. And it’s kitted out with everything you’ll need for your very own GBBO bakeathon. You’ll get 90 minutes to follow a recipe and compete against other bakers in the tent to whisk, whip and stir together the perfect pudding. You’ll work in a pair, so this is ideal for couples, and absolutely loads of fun.

4. Sip cocktails together in Cardiff
If you’re looking for a bar to take your other half to on Valentine’s Day, Cardiff has your back. The Welsh city has more than its fair share of glamorous night spots serving every type of tipple you can imagine. The Ivy is ideal if you’re trying to impress – they serve a great brunch, and they’ve got a special Valentine’s Day menu including Pillow Talk – a sharing dessert that comes with one plate, two spoons and some surprises. And if cocktails are your love language, it’s got to be The Dead Canary. The menu is inspired by Dragons and reads like a Harry Potter novel.

5. Do something different in Bristol
Bristol doesn’t like to follow the crowd, so it’s the perfect destination if you want a Valentine’s Day getaway with a difference. Veeno – as the name suggests – is the place for budding wine connoisseurs. The Italian wine bar has lined up a three-course blind tasting menu packed with aphrodisiacs, and some lovely vinos to match. And if that all sounds a little too refined, head to Carnival of the Dead – The Valentine’s Massacre edition. The line-up at this bass music event at The Marble Factory features Shy FX, but be quick – it’s likely to be a sell-out.

6. Go out for Galentine’s in London
Elle Woods eat your heart out: Neverland London is hosting a Legally Blonde Galentine’s brunch on Sunday 13 February and we’re 100% here for it. It starts at midday with a welcome cocktail, then you’ll have 1.5 hours of bottomless pink prosecco to enjoy with your favourite females. If you’re heading out for the night as a mixed group, try their Japan-themed spring pop-up, Little Kyoto, instead. It opens on 11 February and you can book tables and sofas in a heated Japanese pagoda, get cosy in a Ryokan cabin, or snuggle up in a pretty blossom igloo. Just make sure you book ahead.
