The Metrocentre in Gateshead should be the first port of call for shopaholics. Billed as the UK's original 'mega-mall', it’s crammed with over 250 stores, an IMAX cinema and plenty of restaurants. Just jump on a bus from the city centre and you’ll be there in around 25 minutes. Or if you prefer, try Eldon Square, which is more central and home to department stores like Fenwick and John Lewis.

For a more eclectic line-up, check out the Central Arcade and Grainger Market where you can pick up local produce and one-of-a-kind gifts. Or, for shopping with a side of people watching, the Quayside market on a Sunday is hard to beat.

Getting a snap of the iconic Angel of the North is a must when visiting Newcastle. The angel’s 65-foot wingspan dominates the landscape and can be seen for miles around. In the heart of Newcastle’s cultural quarter is The Biscuit Factory. It’s not a production line for digestives, but actually the largest contemporary art, craft and design gallery in the UK. It’s housed in a former Victorian warehouse, and displays a range of fine art, sculpture and jewellery over two floors.
