Megabus Terms & Conditions

These General Terms & Conditions apply for journeys wholly on megabus services. The contracting party is Midland Red (South) Limited and the applicable law is English Law.

1. You must be aged 16 years, or older, to purchase tickets and services from this website. No discount is given for children.

2. When booking your journey, you must check your journey itinerary before making payment. No refunds will be given for incorrect or duplicated journeys. Once completed, megabus.com reservations cannot be cancelled or refunded. However, while we will make every effort to operate megabus.com services as scheduled, where this fails to occur full refunds or alternative travel arrangements will be offered.

3. You can amend your megabus booking up to 24 hours before the departure of the first megabus service in your booking. You will need to pay the difference between the price paid and the next available price for your journey. If the new journey is cheaper, there will be no refund of the difference. A £1/€1 fee (50p/50c amendment and 50p/50c booking fee) will apply for each booking changed. If you purchase more than one ticket for the same journey you will only be able to amend the group of tickets and you will not be able to amend the tickets individually.

4. You should arrive at your departure point 15 minutes before the scheduled departure of the bus. This will allow you plenty of time to board and prevents any delays to the service. Please note that the departure gates at London Victoria Coach Station will close one minute before departure.

5. A maximum of one child, aged 3 years or under, can travel for free on megabus with each fare paying adult. They are not guaranteed a seat unless a journey has been purchased for them. Children travelling for free cannot occupy a seat if it is needed by a fare paying passenger.

6. Children aged 14 years, or under, must travel with an adult (aged 16 years or older).

7. If the vehicle you are travelling on is fitted with seatbelts, you are legally required to wear it.

8. A valid booking reference number acts as the ticket for your journey and you must present this to the driver before boarding the coach. This may be presented verbally, in written, printed or SMS format. For journeys to and from France, Belgium, Germany and The Netherlands, you must print your confirmation e-mail, as this is your ticket in terms of EU passenger rules, and must be carried during your journey.

9. If you have purchased concessionary travel within Scotland, you must show your Scottish Entitlement card and booking reference when boarding the coach. (Please note that English, Welsh or Northern Irish Concessionary Travel Cards are not valid on any megabus services.)

10. NUS Extra card holders must show their card and booking reference when boarding the bus. If you are unable to show your card, you may have to pay a £10 Penalty Fare.

11. In the interests of the safety and comfort of all of our customers, we restrict the size, type and quantity of luggage or other belongings which you can bring onto our buses and reserve the right to refuse permission for you to bring any item onto our service. megabus.com does not check luggage or provide receipts for luggage transported on the bus by the passenger. We don’t mind what your luggage is packed in, we only ask that it’s no bigger than a standard ‘large’ suitcase and weighs no more than 25kg. Alternatively you can take two medium cases with a combined weight of 25kg or three small bags with a combined weight of 25kg. You can also take a piece of small hand luggage on board with you and it must either fit on your lap or under the seat in front of you. Please be advised that passengers wishing to travel with more luggage you may have items refused. Passengers travelling between Glasgow and London may be charged £5 per piece for excess baggage. Passengers travelling on megatrain.com services are able to bring up to two pieces per passenger. (Frozen food and fresh meat, poultry or fish, accumulators, explosives, ammunition, weapons and combustible or otherwise hazardous materials including petrol are not permitted on any megabus service.) Only the driver may store or remove luggage from the lockers or trailer.

11b. We cannot be held responsible for any loss or inconvenience to you if you are refused travel under these circumstances. We reserve the right to request that you open any article of luggage for inspection by the driver or other company officer in your presence if, for reasons of security, it is considered necessary to do so.

11c. When travelling on our coach, you may be required to place certain items of luggage in the luggage locker which is situated beneath the passenger saloon of the vehicle and is accessed by external locker doors. Please note that high cost items or those which are of particular personal value should be kept on your person at all times.

11d. Items that should never be placed in the luggage hold will include currency, valuable securities such as cheques, premium bonds or money orders, passports, driving licenses, certificates, jewellery, portable electronic devices such as cameras, mobile telephones, laptops and tablets.

11e. Please note that megabus.com cannot be held liable for the loss of these items if left unattended.

11f. Megabus.com advise passengers to insure their personal belongings by way of household or travel insurance, especially if carrying valuable items, with a reputable insurer against all risks of loss or damage to the full replacement value.

12. No Smoking policy. Passengers are not permitted to smoke, this includes electronic cigarettes in any vehicle operated by the Company and designated no smoking areas in any coach station. The Company is entitled to require offending passengers to remove themselves from the coach or coach station if they do not comply with a request to desist from smoking.

13. Dogs and other animals are not permitted on any megabus service, with the exception of assistance dogs (e.g. guide dogs).

14. Insurance is purchased by the carrier in accordance with our legal responsibility. All legal liabilities to third parties, to include damage to property and personal injury are covered. Our maximum liability to you for any loss or damage to your luggage, on megabus.com services under any and all circumstances is limited to £500 for all such loss or damage.

Megabus.com will not be liable for any monetary loss or the loss of legal documents. This includes currency, valuable securities such as cheques, premium bonds, money orders, certificates, passports or driving licences.  Items of significant value such as jewellery and portable electronic devices should be kept on your persons at all times. Megabus.com can not be held liable for these items left unattended.
It is advised that you insure your luggage, especially if you are carrying valuable items, with reputable insurers against all usual and normal risks of loss or damage, to the full replacement value of the luggage, with no excess.

Loss of luggage or personal property must be notified immediately to a megabus.com employee. The passenger should also contact the company owning the vehicle on which they travelled.

15. If we have reason to suspect fraudulent use of booking references, transfer to another person, or other abuse, we reserve the right to refuse you travel on our service(s). No refund will be given in relation to fraudulent use of booking references.

16. Stagecoach Group and affiliated company passes are not valid for travel on megabus services.

Megatrain Terms & Conditions

These General Terms & Conditions apply for journeys wholly on megatrain services provided by East Midlands Trains, South West Trains or Virgin Trains.

1.You must be aged 16 years, or older, to purchase tickets and services from this website.

2. Fares apply to all passengers aged 5 years or older. No discount is given for children or Railcard holders.

3. When booking your journey, you must check your journey itinerary before making payment. Once paid for, megatrain tickets are not refundable except under Condition 11g.

4. You can amend your megatrain booking up to 48 hours before the departure of the first megatrain service in your booking. You will need to pay the difference between the price paid and the next available price for your journey. If the new journey is at cheaper, there will be no refund of the difference. A £1/€1 fee (50p/50c amendment and 50p/50c booking fee) will apply for each booking changed. If you purchase more than one ticket for the same journey you will only be able to amend the group of tickets and you will not be able to amend the tickets individually.

5.Passengers travelling with megatrain.com are advised that reference numbers should be presented to a member of staff, when requested, in either a printed format or displayed on a mobile phone or tablet when requested. This measure will allow crews to check your reference quickly and efficiently against a list of correct megatrain reference numbers for that service. Please be aware of the following conditions of service

i.Seat reservations are not available on megatrain services.

ii.Reservation numbers presented in a written format will not be accepted.

iii.Passengers without an acceptable means of showing their booking reference when requested will be in breach of Megatrain conditions, and will be required to purchase a full priced single ticket for their journey.

6.You should arrive at your departure station at least 15 minutes before the scheduled departure of the train. This will allow you plenty of time to board and prevents any delay to the train service.

7.Journeys are only available for travel in Standard Class. A Weekend First Upgrade is available on East Midlands Trains at weekends and public holidays, subject to availability.

8. Megatrain booking references cannot be used in conjunction with any National Rail, East Midlands Trains, Virgin Trains or South West Trains promotion or offer unless stated otherwise. (This includes, but is not limited to, PlusBus and discounted admission tickets to attractions.)

9. Seat reservations are not available on megatrain services.

10. Services provided by Virgin Trains must be booked at least 48 hours in advance of travel. Services provided by other operators can be booked the day before travel.

11.    Bookings for megatrain services are in accordance with the National Rail Conditions of Carriage. Some of these conditions are clarified or specifically amended below.
a.    You must travel wholly between the origin and destination, on the date and at the time(s) in your booking confirmation. If you start, break and resume, or end your journey at any intermediate station you will need to buy a new rail ticket for the entire journey made. This rail ticket will be the price of the most appropriate undiscounted Single rail fare for the journey being made. No refund will be given on the megatrain ticket or additional ticket purchased. In addition, you may have to pay a Penalty Fare.

b.    A valid booking reference acts as the ticket for your journey. You must present this when requested by a member of staff whilst travelling on the train or to enter/leave a station.

c.    NUS Extra card holders must show their card and booking reference when asked by a member of staff. If you are unable to show your card when requested, you will need to buy a new rail ticket. This rail ticket will be the price of the most appropriate undiscounted Single rail fare for the journey being made. No refund will be given on the megatrain ticket or additional ticket purchased.

d.    If you are unable to present a valid reference for your journey when requested, either on the train or exiting the station, you will be treated as having no ticket for your journey. You will have to pay the undiscounted Anytime Single rail fare for the journey being made. In addition, you may have to pay a Penalty Fare if your journey involves travel on East Midlands Trains or South West Trains. No refund will be given on the megatrain ticket or additional ticket purchased.

e.    If you are unable to present a valid reference for you journey when entering the station, you will need to buy a ticket from the self-service ticket machine or ticket office. No refund will be given on the megatrain ticket or additional rail ticket purchased.

f.    You must ensure that you have a valid rail ticket for any parts of your journey not covered by your megatrain reference. If you are unable to do this, you will be charged the undiscounted Anytime Single rail fare for the journey being made. In addition, you may have to pay a Penalty Fare if your journey involves travel on East Midlands Trains or South West Trains.

g.    If the rail part of the megatrain service you are booked on is cancelled, or delayed by 60 minutes or more, please seek advice from station staff as you may travel on the next available rail service towards your destination. If you then decide not to travel, you may have a full refund of the megatrain fare and booking fee.

h.    No compensation will be offered if your journey is cancelled or delayed.

i.    Seat reservations are not available on megatrain services.

j.    Cycles (not tandems) are permitted on megatrain services operated by South West Trains (London Waterloo to/from Bournemouth, Havant, Poole, Portsmouth and Weymouth only) and must be stowed in dedicated areas of the train, subject to space. Cycles are not permitted on any Virgin Trains services. Cycles are only permitted on an East Midlands Trains Service with a valid cycle reservation, cycle reservations are subject to availability and refunds will not be given due to lack of availability.  To make a cycle reservation please call 08457 125 678. Folding cycles can be carried on any megatrain service as hand luggage if they remain folded for the duration of journey.

k.    A maximum of two children (aged under 5 years) can travel for free with each fare paying adult. They are not entitled to a seat unless a journey has been purchased for them. Children travelling for free cannot occupy a seat if it is needed by a fare paying passenger.

l.    You may take up to three items of luggage (up to 50kg each) with each fare paying passenger, without charge. More details are available in the National Rail Conditions of Carriage. Please ensure luggage is safely stored in luggage racks (where provided), in overhead racks or under your seat. A charge may be made for excess or over sized luggage; large items that obstruct doors and gangways cannot be carried.

12. Insurance is purchased by the carrier in accordance with our legal responsibility. All legal liabilities to third parties, to include damage to property and personal injury are covered. Our maximum liability to you for any loss or damage to your luggage, on megabus.com services under any and all circumstances is limited to £500 for all such loss or damage.

Megabus.com will not be liable for any monetary loss or the loss of legal documents. This includes currency, valuable securities such as cheques, premium bonds, money orders, certificates, passports or driving licences.  Items of significant value such as jewellery and portable electronic devices should be kept on your persons at all times. Megabus.com can not be held liable for these items left unattended.

15. If we have reason to suspect fraudulent use of booking references, transfer to another person, or other abuse, we reserve the right to refuse you travel on our service(s). No refund will be given in relation to fraudulent use of booking references.

16. Stagecoach Group and affiliated company passes are not valid for travel on megabusGold services.

Pricing

All prices are shown in £ Sterling and € Euro. Megabus.com one-way fares start as low as £1/€1. Fares will vary by reservation date, day of travel and demand for seats. £1/€1 fares are limited. Fares are subject to change without notice. A 50p/50c fee is charged for all reservations. For changes to existing reservations a 50p/50c amendment fee and a 50p/50c new reservation fee will apply. Any change to your reservation may result in a fare increase. Megabus will offer its best prices to those who make reservations early or choose less popular trips. However, all trips will remain competitively priced offering excellent value for your money. Please note that due to the high sales volumes on our website, prices may fluctuate between searches.

A single reservation fee of 50p/50c is charged for all megabus reservations. This fee is charged to cover bank and administration charges related to your reservation.

Journeys booked by phone will be sold at the same price as those booked through the internet, including the 50p/50c booking fee. However all calls to the sales line will be charged at 61p per minure from landlines and mobiles may be more.

megabus.com operates certain routes, as a joint venture with other operators. Where such a route allows tickets to be purchased on board, this will be done at the price set by the operator. megabus.com tickets cannot be purchased on board.

Customers may choose to have their reservation number sent to their mobile phone as a SMS text message. Text messages are charged at 10p per message/reservation; this fee is charged to cover text message and related administration costs related to your order.

megabus.com has the right to cancel reservations (whether or not confirmed) of any customer whenever such action is necessary to comply with any governmental regulation, upon any governmental request for emergency transportation in connection with the national defense, or whenever such action is necessary or advisable by reason of weather or other conditions beyond Megabus' control, including Force Majeure events.

Refusal To Transport

Megabus shall have the right to refuse to transport or shall have the right to remove any customer for the following reasons:

  • Government Request or Regulations - Whenever such action is necessary to comply with any government regulation, security directive, or any governmental request for emergency transportation in connection with the national defense.
  • Force Majeure and Other Conditions - Whenever such action is necessary or advisable by reason of weather or other conditions beyond megabus.com control including, but not limited to, acts of God, force majeure, strikes, civil commotions, embargoes, wars, hostilities, terrorist activities, or disturbances, whether actual, threatened, or reported.
  • Safety - Whenever refusal or removal of a customer may be necessary for the safety of such customer or other customers or drivers, including, but not limited to:
    1. Persons whose conduct is disorderly, offensive, abusive, or violent;
    2. Persons who fail to comply with or interfere with the duties of driver;
    3. Persons who wear or have on or about their person concealed or unconcealed deadly or dangerous weapons;
    4. Persons with a communicable disease or infection known or reasonably believed by megabus to pose a direct threat to the health or safety of others.
