The 5 music festivals you can't miss in summer 2019

Summer 2019 is going to be another epic year for music festivals in the UK, and now’s the time to book your tickets if you haven’t already. If you’re wondering which festivals to book, we’ve picked out five of the best – whether they’ve got the most impressive line-up of musical acts, or they just promise something a little bit different. Radio 1's Big Weekend, May 24-26, Stewart Park, Middlesbrough
Radio 1’s Big Weekend is held in a different location every year, and this time around it’s Middlesbrough’s turn to host the party. Stewart Park is a huge, 120-acre space in a suburb in the south of the town, so it’s the perfect setting for this three-day festival just before May half-term. As you’d expect from Radio 1, there’s a stellar line-up of acts – with the likes of Mark Ronson and Annie Mac warming things up on the Friday night, and Miley Cyrus, Stormzy, Bring Me the Horizon, Jess Glynne, The 1975, Little Mix, Sigrid and Rita Ora making appearance over the weekend.

Parklife, June 8-9, Heaton Park, Manchester
For one weekend only, Manchester’s Heaton Park will be graced with some huge acts at Parklife this year. Highlights of Saturday’s line-up include Cardi B, Christina & The Queens and Eric Prydz, with DJ sets from Annie Mac and Chase & Status. On Sunday everyone’s talking about George Ezra, The Streets and Solange, closely followed by Major Lazer Sound System. The great thing about this one is it’s multi-genre, so you’re guaranteed to hear something you love.

Download Festival, June 14-16, Donington Park, Derbyshire
For rock music, it’s got to be Download Festival at Donington Park. The 2019 festival line-up packs in names like Slipknot, Tool, Def Leppard, Smashing Pumpkins, Halestorm and Stone Temple Pilots. But alongside big-name acts, Download promises some brilliant entertainment to keep the crowds happy. That includes Rockfit – a heavy metal exercise class – the UK Air Guitar Championships, and an on-site tattoo parlour. Rock on.

Glastonbury, 26-30 June, Worthy Farm
As far as festivals go, Glastonbury is The One. It started in 1970, and after a year off in 2018, the 2019 event promises the usual mix of word-famous acts, up-and-coming musical stars and a large dose of Glasto-style partying. This year’s acts range from The Killers to The Cure, Kylie to Kate Tempest, and Snow Patrol to Interpol. And everything is spread across dozens of different areas at Worthy Farm, so you’ll find yourself at the Pyramid Stage one minute and the Field of Avalon the next. Definitely one of those festivals that has to be done at least once.

Boardmasters, 7-11 August, Newquay
Boardmasters makes the most of its Cornish coast location – it’s a festival that teams music with surfing. That means, alongside a weekend of musical acts like Wu-Tang Clan, Florence + The Machine and Foals, you get a whole week of pro surf competitions. These take place over on Fistral Beach alongside skate and BMX competitions. Plus, there are plenty of extras – including some seriously good after-parties to look forward to.
